Are weight loss injections worth it?
November 2, 2024
By Claire JonesWeight loss injections are THE hottest topic in the weight loss world. They really do seem like the holy grail for weight loss.
Indeed for some people, who meet the criteria for whom they are designed, and are prescribed them by reputable providers, they can be entirely appropriate and worth it. Anecdotal and formal evidence suggests that they really do help some people to lose weight much more easily than with conventional, non-medical approaches.
The reason for this seems to be that they significantly dampen the desire for food, making it much easier to stick to eating in a calorie deficit.
We know that being overweight has long term health implications, so losing weight, for most people who are overweight, is going to be beneficial. However, the injections are a medication, and all medications come with risks and side effects. And we don’t yet know the long term risks.
Furthermore, some people report not wanting to eat very much at all while taking them, which brings other concerns, such as malnutrition, and lacking in energy for daily living.
And there is the question about what happens when you stop taking it. Will the weight go back on? That depends…
Weight loss injections are not recommended to be a standalone strategy, but as part of an overall health strategy that includes advice and support on following a healthy diet, and undertaking both cardio and resistance-based exercise wherever possible.
So, as with anything, deciding whether it is worth it involves weighing up the pros and cons, including financial and health costs vs benefits, both short and long term, and making a decision. And this will be different for everyone, so getting advice from a professional is a good idea.
You can read other articles about this in my blog.
Are weight loss injections the answer for you?
As an experienced professional in the weight loss arena, and with my own personal weight loss story, I know and understand that they can seem incredibly tempting. Especially when those around you may be getting great results on them.
But I have huge concern that they are being obtained and used inappropriately and potentially dangerously by some people, as highlighted in this recent article in the Express Online.
So firstly, I would urge you, if you are considering taking them, to please do your research and seek guidance from a reputable healthcare professional that they are actually appropriate and safe for you, before making any decisions.
Do not obtain them from unlicenced providers and without a proper assessment, no matter how tempting it is, as you simply do not know what you’re getting and if they are safe for you!
I am not against weight loss injections at all, and believe they have an important role to play in the individual and wider society battles against obesity.
Where appropriate I will support my clients to explore weight loss injection options with reputable providers and with the support of their GP.
I can also support clients who are taking them, as part of an overall safe and effective weight loss strategy and as long as they are also under the care of a reputable provider and their GP.
There is so much pressure on everyone at the moment to take the injections, and while they are worth it for some, they are quite simply not appropriate or feasible for many others.
But where does that leave those who can’t or don’t want to take them?
There are still other ways to lose weight that work!
I want you to know that there are still healthy and successful alternatives for those for whom weight loss injections are not an appropriate option.
They worked before and they still work now.
The benefits of highly personalised weight loss coaching and mentoring.
One of the reason why we feel drawn to the apparent quick fix of the weight loss injections is that it seems easy, and as many people report, it IS.
It’s also true that weight loss without a helping hand of some kind is NOT easy for most people.
When the scales stop moving, which they inevitably do at times, we often throw in the towel, undoing our progress, and end up no better off. In fact we feel worse and believe that all our efforts are wasted.
This is why 5 years ago I started doing the work that I do. I recognised that having highly personalised, intensive support was what many people needed, even if they didn’t realise it themselves to begin with.
So I developed an approach that goes beyond that traditional weekly weigh-in and group chat.
An approach that is flexible enough to adapt to individual lifestyles and budgets, and provides both 1:1 and group support options.
An approach that tackles head-on the reasons why we struggle with our weight so much, and how to overcome them for long term success, not just a short term goal.
It doesn’t matter what method you want to use to lose weight as long as it’s healthy and safe for you.
I will support you with highly personalised coaching, mentoring and accountability to be able to keep going, especially during the times when you simply can’t see how.
If this sounds like something you need, you are welcome to book a complimentary chat with me. We’ll discuss your issues in a safe, non-judgemental and confidential way, and go from there.
