Breaking Free from Groundhog Day: A Journey Towards Sustainable Weight Loss
October 31, 2024
By Claire JonesAre you longing to feel more energetic, more confident, and healthier?
Perhaps you want to move freely and fit into the beautiful clothes that currently remain just out of reach in your wardrobe.
Of course, it’s about not just shedding the weight itself, but also shedding the constraints of being overweight that prevent you from embracing the life you truly desire.
Many of us start our days with the best of intentions.
You might tell yourself that today is the day you’ll stick to healthier choices, eat less, and move more. But the reality of modern living, with it’s constant temptations and busy schedules, can make these goals feel unreachable.
Especially at the weekends, it’s all too common to eat more than necessary, promising ourselves that we’ll start afresh tomorrow or on Monday.
Yet, as the cycle repeats, each day can start to feel frustratingly similar—a true Groundhog Day scenario (if you’ve seen the film you’ll know exactly what I mean!)
Why do these patterns persist? Often, it’s because the food we love surrounds us, and frankly, we enjoy eating it. And not only that, we’ve learned to use food as a means of coping with modern life, through things like emotional eating. It just makes us feel better!
The idea of sacrificing this enjoyment or these ways of coping seems daunting.
Moreover, the thought of integrating extensive exercise routines and meticulous meal planning into an already packed schedule can feel just too overwhelming.
As the day progresses, it’s easy to succumb to stress, tiredness, or the need to celebrate, leading us down the path of least resistance: our old eating habits.
But what if there was a way to break free from this repetitive cycle?
Can you lose weight without weight loss injections or weight loss surgery?
Weight loss injections and weight loss surgery are more popular than ever and it would be easy to assume they are now the only way to lose weight.
There is so much ‘FOMO’ about them, as well as a lot of suspicion.
Indeed they are some of the most searched for weight loss topics at the moment so it’s important that I make reference to them in this article, and you can read others in my blog.
But are they the answer for you?
What if you could find a method that genuinely works, one that aligns with your life without feeling like a constant battle? AND without needing any medical intervention?
From personal experience, I can attest that finding freedom from this cycle is not only possible, but also transformative, with not a needle or surgeon’s knife in sight.
I should point out I am not against weight loss surgery or weight loss injections, and where appropriate will support my clients to explore these options with reputable providers and with the support of their GP.
But the truth is that weight loss surgery and weight loss injections are beyond the reach of many either due to cost, long waiting lists or health contraindications.
And besides that, not everyone wants to go down that road.
While the pressure at the moment may seem immense to take the injections or have surgery, not everyone wants or needs to, or is able to, and if that’s you, you need to know that it’s ok not to.
So I will continue to show you that there are still healthy and successful alternatives for those for whom weight loss surgery or weight loss injections are not a suitable option.
Now, with that out of the way, please read on…
You too can be successful in losing weight and keeping it off, like I have
Thirteen years ago, I broke free from the weight management loop that I had been stuck in for over 25 years, and I did it by using my most powerful asset…my mind.
The change brought so much more than just physical benefits; it revitalised my energy levels, enhanced my quality of life, and transformed every aspect of my existence.
And for the last 5 years I’ve been helping others transform their lives too.
Take the story of my client, Dee, for instance.
After working together for over 18 months, Dee, in her mid-50s, has undergone a significant transformation that continues daily.
She embarked on this journey not knowing what to expect and found each session revealing new layers of self-discovery.
Dee learned to be true to herself and connected deeply with her personal motivations. This journey wasn’t just about physical transformation—it was emotional and mental too, affecting every facet of her life in the most positive ways.

Dee’s story reflects a common theme among many who seek a lasting change.
Often, the cost of continuous quick fixes, diet clubs, and temporary solutions adds up, both financially and emotionally. Dee did the maths and realised that the long-term costs of not addressing her health—like potential type two diabetes and high blood pressure—far outweighed the investment in a comprehensive, personalised programme.
And she’s not alone.
How tracking your weight and calories can help you lose weight: the benefits of knowing your numbers
Another of my clients, Sarah, in her early 50s and, like Dee, with a decades-long history of struggling with her weight, recently shared a post in my Accountability Club with a graph of her weight loss this year.

She said “This is the benefit of tracking weight consistently. Sometimes it feels like I am not getting anywhere and I did have a difficult start to the autumn but I am trying and actually the line is still gradually going down.
Only two areas where it has gone up a bit in the last year…one was Easter, the other September and I know why and have learnt from this.
Again, ignoring the scales and not tracking.
It is slow progress but it is progress and the best weight loss year so far that I have had in a long time. The graph will carry on slowly going down and I will get there. It will just take time.”
My response to Sarah was as follows:
“Brilliant Sarah, and I would add this is a very normal pattern. Not what we want and expect but is the reality. We can’t be on it all the time. Accepting this and keeping going anyway and not giving up is what makes the difference. Imagine where you’d be now if you hadn’t kept going after that first blip.
It also shows how important weighing is for preventing weight gain. Just get on those scales no matter what. Ignoring them is as dangerous as ignoring our bank balance. I’m so proud of what you’ve achieved so far. Thank you for sharing.”
Another client, Julie, in her mid-40s and also with long history of struggling with her weight, responded to Sarah by saying “I would like a straight line downwards but I’m slowly starting to see a positive change whilst living life along the way and making it more sustainable”.
My response to Julie was …
“You will NEVER have a straight line…. Our bodies and brains are very powerful and want us to return to how we were as they believe that’s what we need to be. They don’t understand that it’s not healthy… as none of us were supposed to ever get as overweight as happens nowadays so there’s no ‘off’ switch. We have to create one.
So by building in periods of maintenance we give our bodies and brains a chance to accept the new normal, and also eating more on some days reminds the body there’s no famine so it doesn’t have to try to conserve more energy, eating into our calorie deficit.
But we still have to keep an eye on things by weighing (non-negotiable just like looking at our bank balance is) and if necessary tracking calorie intake as well, as the natural tendency is to eat more than we need.
It’s wonderful that you’re starting to realise that slower is more sustainable, and that you are living life along the way…. this is how to be successful. So HUGE progress, well done!”
This pattern is also illustrated by client Adrian, retired, in his late 60s, who had resigned himself to being overweight as he thought it was just something that happened to you when you got older, as it had crept on over the years.
He’s since discovered that it’s not inevitable, that age is just a number, and is now able to enjoy activities like the gym, gardening and motorcycle riding with a whole new level of energy and ability, and get back into clothes he’s not worn for years!
Not to mention reduce his worries about developing lifestyle-related health conditions which tend to appear in our later years.
He embraced the idea of collecting the data on weight and calories and together we’ve been monitoring them closely.

There were a few times where his weight loss had stalled and was even going up, but by collecting and examining the data in more detail we could see that extra calories had been creeping back in, and once he was aware of this was able to make the adjustments to get the scales moving again.
This is NOT easy to do on your own, and when the scales stop moving it can be so easy to be in denial that we’re doing anything differently, think there’s something wrong with us, that what we’re doing isn’t working, and give up, ending up right back where we started.
This is where highly personalised coaching, mentoring and accountability come in to their own as they help you to see your blind spots, and help you to keep going when your whole being is screaming at you to stop.
And sometimes keeping going means standing still until you can get moving again… and being supported in standing still and not going into reverse (this bit is my most super superpower!!) until you’re ready to get the scales going down again.
In other areas of life and business we have to know our numbers, and be patient, and persevere, and work through roadblocks, so why should this be any different?
But it’s not easy in the world we find ourselves living in, and can feel impossible because we’re constantly having to navigate the temptations and the stresses of modern life.
But it really doesn’t have to be this way.
Sarah, Julie, Dee, Adrian and I are showing you that. We’ve all been there, thinking it was an impossible problem to solve.
But with the right approach, we all found that it’s not impossible after all. And we’re reaping the benefits of our efforts to put ourselves and our health and quality of life first.
Overeating might feel good in the moment, but it’s fleeting. The energy we get from losing weight and keeping it off lasts a lifetime!
So are you ready to step off the rollercoaster of temporary fixes and onto a path of lasting change, and truly Energise Your Life?
It starts with understanding your unique challenges and crafting a plan that respects your lifestyle, personality, and preferences.
This isn’t about overhauling your entire life or giving up all the foods you love. It’s about making sustainable changes that enhance your life, not restrict it.
Understanding your numbers, whilst not the best fit for everyone, can be crucial to your success when used appropriately, and those of my clients who embrace the data and learn how to use it constructively tend to be more successful.
