Motorcycle Mindset For Instructors

Motorcycle Mindset Support for Instructors, Training Schools and Rider Organisations

You’ve probably taught riders who understand what you’re asking them to do, have demonstrated that they can do it, but then seem to lose everything they’ve learned when nerves, pressure or self-doubt take over.

Perhaps they freeze during a manoeuvre, become overwhelmed during training, struggle to recover from a mistake or arrive for their next lesson having spent days worrying about what might go wrong.

Some will lose confidence after a failed test. Others may be progressing well but still believe they’re not good enough. And some will simply stop booking lessons, despite having the potential to become capable riders.

As an instructor, you can provide excellent training, patience, encouragement and reassurance. But there will be times when the psychological barriers affecting a learner need more individual attention than you can reasonably provide during a riding lesson.

That’s where motorcycle mindset coaching can help.

Working Alongside Instructors

I’m Claire Jones, an award-winning professional coach, author of the bestselling Remember You’re a Rider and founder of Motorcycle Mindset Coaching.

I work with new, returning and experienced riders who are finding that fear, anxiety, self-doubt, pressure or previous experiences are affecting their riding.

My approach brings together professional coaching, behaviour change, psychological principles and my own experience of learning to ride as an adult.

I started riding at 50, and despite already being an experienced mindset coach, I found the learning process far more challenging than I expected. That experience gave me a particular appreciation of the difficulties instructors encounter when a learner’s emotional responses start interfering with their progress.

My role is to help riders develop the psychological tools to make better use of the practical skills you are teaching them.

I don’t provide riding instruction, assess technical competence or make decisions about whether someone is safe to ride. Those responsibilities remain with qualified motorcycle instructors.

Recognising When a Rider Might Benefit From Mindset Support

Every learner is different, and difficulties with a particular skill don’t automatically mean there’s a mindset problem. Sometimes more training, practice or a different teaching approach is exactly what’s needed.

However, you might recognise some of these patterns:

  • A learner who can perform a manoeuvre during practice but repeatedly struggles under test conditions.
  • Someone whose anxiety becomes so overwhelming that they struggle to take in instructions or concentrate.
  • A rider who dwells on mistakes, even after receiving constructive feedback and reassurance.
  • Someone who is constantly comparing their progress with other learners and feels embarrassed about taking longer.
  • A trainee who repeatedly cancels or postpones lessons because they’re frightened of what might happen.
  • An experienced rider whose confidence has deteriorated following an accident, near miss or prolonged break.
  • A learner who has developed a strong belief that they simply aren’t capable of riding, despite evidence of progress.

Understanding what’s driving these responses can help riders approach their learning differently.

How I Can Support Your Learners

Remember You’re a Rider: The Mindset Guide for New and Nervous Motorcyclists

My bestselling book explores the psychological side of learning and riding, including fear, confidence, risk perception, overthinking, setbacks, pressure and the nervous system’s response to challenging situations.

It’s written for everyday riders, in accessible language, with explanations and practical exercises they can use alongside their training.

The book is already being recommended by motorcycle instructors, training schools and rider organisations across the UK.

Pocket Rider Mindset Coach

The Pocket Rider Mindset Coach is an interactive AI-based companion developed from the principles of Remember You’re a Rider and my professional coaching approach.

It gives riders somewhere to explore their concerns between lessons, whether they’re worried about an upcoming test, replaying a mistake, questioning their progress or struggling with confidence.

Sometimes these thoughts become more difficult in the hours or days between training sessions, when an instructor isn’t available to provide support.

There are two versions available, including a mindset-only version and a version developed with Phoenix Motorcycle Training which also incorporates training-related support.

The Pocket Rider complements instruction but cannot observe a rider, assess their competence or replace an instructor’s professional judgement.

Personal 1:1 Motorcycle Mindset Coaching

Some riders benefit from more intensive, individual support.

My four-hour coaching programme is designed around the rider’s specific challenges, rather than following a generic confidence-building programme.

This might include test anxiety, fear of losing control, performance pressure, previous incidents, self-doubt, difficulty managing emotional responses or wider life circumstances affecting their learning.

Sessions can be planned around their motorcycle training, allowing them to develop and practise psychological strategies between lessons.

The programme includes an initial 60-minute consultation, six further 30-minute sessions, a personalised coaching plan and support between appointments.

The standard package is £400, with a 5% discount for Motorcycle Training referrals. If a rider has also read my book, and this is evidenced in the referral, a larger discount is available.

Who Supports the Instructor?

As a motorcycle instructor, you’re used to being the person others turn to for guidance, reassurance and support. But what happens when it’s your own confidence that’s taken a knock?

Perhaps you’ve experienced an incident or near miss that’s shaken you up. Maybe you’re relatively new to instructing and still finding your feet, or you’ve got an assessment, accreditation or professional development milestone coming up that’s putting you under pressure.

You might be an experienced instructor who’s always been confident but suddenly finds yourself questioning your abilities after something hasn’t gone to plan.

And there’s the added pressure of feeling that, as an instructor, you should be confident. That you should be able to manage your own nerves, put setbacks behind you and know how to deal with whatever comes your way.

But being highly skilled and experienced doesn’t make you immune to the psychological challenges that affect other riders.

Your confidence deserves attention too.

Mindset Coaching for Motorcycle Instructors

I work with instructors as well as learners, helping you understand and address the thoughts, beliefs and emotional responses that may be affecting your confidence or performance.

This might include:

  • Confidence after an incident or near miss: Working through what’s happened and rebuilding trust in your own judgement and abilities.
  • New instructor nerves: Managing self-doubt, imposter syndrome and the pressure of being responsible for someone else’s learning.
  • Accreditation and assessment anxiety: Preparing psychologically for observations, assessments, advanced qualifications or professional development milestones.
  • Confidence following a setback: Managing the impact of a difficult lesson, an unsuccessful assessment or an experience that’s left you questioning yourself.
  • Performance pressure: Dealing with the expectation that you must always be capable, knowledgeable and in control.
  • Returning after time away: Rebuilding confidence following an extended break from riding or instructing.

Having the technical skills, qualifications and experience doesn’t automatically mean you’ll feel confident in every situation.

Sometimes it helps to have someone outside your professional environment who understands the psychological side of riding, can offer a different perspective and give you the space to explore what’s happening without feeling judged.

My coaching is confidential, personalised and tailored to your individual circumstances.

You’re there to support your riders. I’m here to support you, too.

Commission tailored, paid mindset training sessions to help you and your instructors better understand and support the psychological challenges riders experience.

Would your instructors benefit from a better understanding of the psychological challenges that can affect riders during training?

I offer bespoke mindset training sessions for individual instructors, training schools and rider organisations, designed around the challenges you and your team encounter.

Sessions can explore subjects such as rider anxiety, fear responses, confidence, self-doubt, performance pressure, communication, managing setbacks and recognising when a learner may benefit from additional psychological support.

We can use real examples from your training environment to explore what’s happening, why riders might respond as they do and how instructors can adapt their approach while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

Training can be delivered online or in person, as a focused session, group workshop or a more comprehensive programme.

Bespoke training is a paid professional service, with fees agreed in advance according to your requirements, session length, number of participants and delivery arrangements.

Workshops, Talks and Collaborative Events

I also work with training providers and motorcycle organisations to offer mindset-focused workshops, talks and events.

  • Understanding fear and the nervous system when learning to ride.
  • The relationship between confidence, competence and perceived risk.
  • Managing test pressure and performance anxiety.
  • Developing resilience after setbacks.
  • Supporting riders who struggle with self-doubt or overthinking.

Working With Motorcycle Training Organisations

I work with Phoenix Motorcycle Training as a mindset coaching partner, helping to bring additional psychological support to learners through personal coaching, digital resources and the Ride with Confidence course.

I also work with the British Motorcyclists Federation as a Mindset Partner and the Honda Owners Club GB as its Mindset Coach.

My book is recommended by a growing number of motorcycle training schools and instructors, and I welcome conversations with organisations interested in providing additional mindset support to their learners or members.

Depending on the needs of your school or organisation, this might involve recommending existing resources, referring individual learners, purchasing books for your trainees, arranging a talk or exploring a collaborative event.

Why Work With Me?

Before entering the motorcycle industry, I had already spent many years working in professional coaching, behaviour change, leadership and risk management.

My background includes senior NHS management, personal training, life coaching, hypnotherapy, NLP and further study in psychology and education.

Since establishing my coaching business in 2020, I’ve delivered more than 2,300 hours of individual coaching, supporting people with a wide range of behavioural and psychological challenges, and have won multiple awards for my coaching.

I bring that experience to motorcycling, alongside my own understanding of what learning to ride can feel like when confidence doesn’t come easily.

I also recognise the limits of my role. I respect the skills, responsibilities and professional judgement of motorcycle instructors, and I encourage riders to continue investing in appropriate training.

What Instructors Are Saying

Paul Beattie

Director and Chief Instructor, Inner Circle Training Ltd | Former CBT/DAS Instructor | ERS/Advanced Riding Instructor and IAM Examiner

“Early in my instructing career, I realised this wasn’t a lack of skill – something else was getting in the way, preventing the rider from accessing their existing skills.”

“None of my formal training – my CBT or DAS instructor, RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Riding Instruction, BTEC Diploma, ERS Trainer, IAM National Observer, IAM Examiner, etc – had dealt with this aspect of the role.”

“Then I read Claire’s book and BOOM! Finally, someone had identified and explained the issue, the reasons behind it and how to deal with it effectively. And in a very engaging way, too!”

“Had I had access to Claire’s book back when I ran an ATB teaching CBT and DAS, I would have referred to it often. I would have recommended it to those riders who felt they were struggling more than ‘normal’. It would have helped them even more than I could.”

“In summary, this is a fantastic book for anyone who wants to develop their confidence when riding – whether that’s at the beginning of their learning journey or much later in it. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

Rich Woolgar

DVSA Instructor and Motorcycle Training School Owner

“I’ve just purchased copies for all of my Instructors!”

“Claire’s expertise is clear to see right from the first few pages.”

The ART Team had a morning off the bikes for a fantastic “Coach the Coach” session with Claire Jones from Motorcycle Mindset Mastery with Claire Jones taking us through a whole range of skills to help & support riders struggling with nerves, confidence, anxieties & neurodiversities. Helping us help you more!

Claire’s excellent book is available to buy in store and online.

Jim Sanderson

Creator of Biker Down

“If someone had produced this work at the start of my motorcycling journey, it would have been like having a Jedi biker in my pocket.”

Alan Stevens

Managing Director and Motorcycle Instructor, Camrider Norwich, Ipswich and Diss

“As a retired police officer and Managing Director of a motorcycle training school, I’ve spent many years focused on rider safety, mindset, and professional standards. Remember You’re a Rider genuinely struck me on both a personal and professional level.”

“For instructors, advanced riders, and anyone serious about developing not just their riding ability but their awareness and responsibility, this is essential reading. I would wholeheartedly recommend it.”

Motorcycle Trainer

Amazon Reviewer

“This is definitely a book trainers should read as well as aspiring motorcyclists.”

Russ Murray

“A must read for everyone with any connection to motorcycles.”

Aspiring Motorcycle Instructor
