Weight Loss Mindset Shifts: What to Do When You Feel Like Giving Up
June 3, 2025
By Claire JonesYou know the kind of day I mean.
The kind where you wake up already tired…
The jog you planned before work doesn’t happen.
The weekend was less “movement and mindfulness,” more “scrolling and snacks.”
The scale ticks up, your motivation dips down, and a quiet voice whispers:
“You’re slipping again.”
But here’s what I’ve learned, both personally and in coaching many 1:1 weight loss clients over the last 5 years:
A weight loss wobble isn’t failure.
It’s feedback.
What that tired morning is really telling you
One of my weight loss clients said this in her check-in recently:
“I was going to get up and jog but just couldn’t wake up. My period’s just started, and I’ve not been feeling great.”
The previous version of her might have gone straight to guilt, shame and “pushing through.”
Now? She noticed the pattern, connected it to her cycle, and named her capacity.
That’s growth.
That’s emotional literacy.
And that’s exactly what we build inside our sessions… the ability to spot what’s really going on, instead of turning it into another stick to beat yourself with.
Not every day is a “go hard” day, and that’s the point
As a coach (and a human), I don’t aim for perfection.
Not in myself. Not in my clients.
We aim for awareness.
And then we build habits that flex with the reality of our lives… periods, family, pets, pressure and all.
(Yes, even with my gorgeous 19-month-old rescue Belgian Malinois pulling me in every direction lately, I still build in the space to check in with myself. )
So what do you do on a wobbly day?
Here’s what I suggest… and what I practice myself:
- Zoom out.
One day is never the whole story.
Look at the week, not the moment. Context gives clarity. - Ask better questions.
Instead of “Why do I always mess up?” try “What led to me going off plan on this occasion, and what do I need more of right now?” - Take a micro-action.
One small thing… like adding protein to your next meal, or pausing to log your dinner… can be enough to reset momentum (and is what we work on in my monthly challenges).
What if the wobble is part of the win?
That’s not just a feel-good phrase. It’s neuroscience.
Every time you notice a pattern, name it without shame, and choose a slightly different response, you’re rewiring.
Your brain’s learning a new groove.
So next time you feel off-track?
Remember this:
It’s not about doing it perfectly.
It’s about not disappearing when it isn’t.
I’d love to hear from you:
What do your “wobbly days” look like, and what helps you navigate them?
