THIS is why it’s so hard to lose weight. But it’s not impossible. Read this to find out more.

By Claire Jones“Why is it so easy for me to put on weight and why is it so hard to lose it?“
…is something I get asked a lot, usually from people who see others seem to do it so effortlessly and yet they struggle so much, therefore they think there must be something wrong with them.
There’s absolutely not… let me explain…
One fundamental thing that often gets overlooked when it comes to losing weight is this…
We’re not designed to lose weight voluntarily.
Read that again.
We’re not designed to lose weight voluntarily.
This is the real reason why most people find it really hard to lose weight and keep it off. The success stories we read about who say that it’s easy really are in the minority. Most others are still struggling, just like you, or succeeded but found it really tough, and are probably still struggling more than they are willing to admit.
When we try to lose weight, we get short term results, but after a while our bodies and brains fight back, really hard at times, so our efforts often don’t last, as we are fighting our biology, which was developed to ensure our survival. We are going against everything we want, and that doesn’t usually end well.
Our bodies and brains are designed to desire food and make us overeat when food is available, and they are not going to let go of our carefully stored energy reserves in a hurry.
As far as the primitive parts of our brains are concerned, eating less means there must be a famine, so they drive us to conserve energy, and we get hungry, in a bid to ensure we seek out more food.
But the trouble is, in today’s world, food is everywhere, tastier than ever, and available whenever we want it, which is not good for our health.
These primitive instincts towards food are really, really strong and actually change how we think and behave, hence our behaviour often goes against rational thought, and we self-sabotage, especially when we are hungry, tired, stressed, or upset, or even celebrating. Sound familiar?
There is nothing wrong with you!
I really want you to know that (specific health problems aside) there really is nothing wrong with you if you find it hard to lose weight or keep it off. Your body and brain are doing EXACTLY what they are designed to do, and if there really was a food shortage you would be more likely to survive, as your drive to seek out food is strong, and your ability to store fat is excellent. So please, stop beating yourself up about it, right now.
Unfortunately though, that is not compatible with today’s society, so we either need to accept being overweight, if we want to continue our current lifestyles, or we need to learn how to manage this wonderful ability that we have in the modern, food laden world that we are living in.
Most of the people who are successful in their initial weight loss will put their weight back on (estimates are that 95% of people will do it within 5 years), and often gain even more than they lost, because these primitive survival mechanisms are working against what our rational brains want.
So as can be seen, losing weight and keeping it off is one of the most difficult things in life to do. Therefore, there is absolutely no shame in seeking help to do it.
Yet for some reason we think we should be able to do it by ourselves, or we invest the minimum amount of time, effort or money into it. Changing our behaviour, which is what we need to do to lose weight and keep it off, requires significant investment, but we don’t prioritise that investment. However, we think nothing of spending hundreds or more on holidays, shoes, handbags, or various enhancements like botox, fillers and semi-permanent make-up. How crazy is that?
The Good News
The good news is, it IS possible to lose weight AND keep it off. I have done it myself and kept it off for over 10 years. The key is to change our expectations and learn to manage ourselves within the world we live in, so that we can eat the right ways for us to firstly lose weight and then to keep it off. It is not easy to begin with, and takes some concerted effort, in order to overcome the strong natural desires we have for short term pleasure or comfort over long term rewards, but it IS possible.
So now I have made it my mission in life to help people learn how to lose weight AND keep it off, by fundamentally changing their understanding of how weight loss works. I help them to understand how their own brains and bodies work, and how to manage in a world where everything is set up against us.
I help people to find a healthy balance so that they are not constantly in conflict between what they want to do and what they think they ‘should’ do, and can find a healthy way to manage in today’s world; a world that is not at all compatible with our biology and our psychology.
I don’t just help people to lose weight. I help people to actually manage themselves for life in this very challenging world where everything is set up to make us put on weight, and it’s harder than ever to lose it.
