The Mindset Behind the Messy Middle: A Weight Loss Coach on Setbacks, Self-Doubt, and Starting Again
April 4, 2025
By Claire JonesI dropped my motorbike AGAIN!
I was at a junction, stationary, about to turn and I hesitated. Just for a second. That tiny flicker of doubt threw me off balance, and down the motorbike went. No big drama, no injuries… but the sting was real. Not just physical — emotional too. And it was embarrassing! But I picked myself straight back up… and got help to pick the bike back up by a kind passing motorist.
I’m still learning
Why and how did it happen? Because I’m still learning to ride a motorbike. I’ve passed my full licence, which was a huge milestone. But I’m still building my confidence and competence through practice.
Riding it for me isn’t the hard part, but managing the balance on a big and heavy bike at slow speed, such as at junctions, has been a steep learning curve. As it is for many riders.
I know that just having the qualification doesn’t mean I’ve mastered the skill. I also recognise the value of getting extra training, support and coaching along the way.
That moment at the junction reminded me: progress isn’t linear. Knowing what to do and doing it under pressure are two very different things. And even with all the right knowledge, you can still fall.
As a weight loss and a mindset and confidence coach, that hit me on a deeper level. Because that’s exactly what so many of my clients go through — learning new habits, pushing out of their comfort zones, feeling like they should have it figured out by now, and then slipping.
And it reminded me why mindset coaching is so powerful – not just in weight loss, or learning to ride a motorbike, but in learning any new skill.
There Are No Shortcuts to Growth
Whether you’re learning to ride a motorbike or trying to change your relationship with food, you can’t think your way around the messy middle. You can’t skip over the part where you fall and have to get back up. There’s no amount of planning or knowledge that replaces lived experience.
Mindset coaching steps in right where most people want to give up. It helps reframe the fall. It reminds you that setbacks don’t mean you’re broken — they mean you’re building something. It teaches you to separate your worth from your performance.
Without it, the risk is internalising every slip as evidence you’re not good enough. With it, you start to see failure as part of the process — not the end of it.
A Client’s Story — Same Feeling, Different Challenge
One of my weight loss clients recently went away for a long weekend. It was joyful — family, food, laughter, the kind of reset we all need. But she came back feeling low. “I really overdid it,” she told me. “I feel like I’ve undone everything.”
That thought – the fear that one moment of indulgence erases all progress — is one I hear often. But mindset coaching helped her zoom out. She had enjoyed the trip. She didn’t restrict herself beforehand, nor did she come back and punish herself after. And instead of falling into guilt, she returned to her usual habits with calm and clarity.
That’s not failure. That’s exactly what growth looks like. And it only happened because she’s been doing the inner work – not just following a food plan, but reshaping how she sees herself in the process.
Falling Doesn’t Mean You’re Failing
In both situations — my motorbike drop and her food wobble — it’s tempting to say “I’ve messed up” and want to start over. But we’re not starting from scratch. Every fall gives us feedback. Every recovery adds resilience.
The real progress isn’t about never stumbling. It’s about what you say to yourself when you do.
So What Do You Do When You Fall?
- Pause, but don’t judge. Feel what you need to feel — then remind yourself it’s not the full story.
- Zoom out. Where were you a month ago? A year ago? Is this really the start, or just a bump on the road?
- See the win within the wobble. That client didn’t spiral. I got back on the motorbike. Those are quiet but powerful victories.
- Invest in your mindset. That’s where real change happens — in the way you respond when things get tough.
Mindset is the bridge between effort and progress.
Whether you’re navigating corners on a motorbike or breaking patterns with food, you’ll need more than motivation. You’ll need patience, self-trust, and a mindset that can hold you steady when things get shaky.
You’re not weak for struggling. You’re not failing because you fell.
You’re learning — and learning always begins in the messy middle.
