How My Personal Experience Drives Real, Relatable Weight Loss Coaching For You
April 3, 2025
By Claire JonesNot long ago, I had a respiratory assessment. I was bracing for bad news.
After smoking for 20 years, from 1987 to 2006, there was always a quiet fear in the back of my mind that the damage had been done. Even though I’d quit nearly another 20 years ago (showing my age now!), I figured it had caught up with me.
Lately, I’d felt off – my breathing wasn’t quite right, and I wondered if it was asthma, COPD, or something worse.
But what I heard instead completely surprised me.
Not only do I NOT have asthma or COPD, but my lung function came back between 19 and 28 percent better than what’s expected for my age, gender, and weight. The nurse conducting the assessment told me it was the best result she’d ever seen in clinic!
She asked me, “Do you run?”
Yes. Yes, I do. In fact, I’d walked to the appointment so I could go for a run afterward.
She told me that’s why my lungs are performing so well.
It was one of those moments where everything in my wellness journey clicked into place. All the small decisions, all the uncomfortable shifts, all the old habits I let go of – they really mattered. And they have paid off in a big way.
Addiction, Avoidance, and a Different Path
When I quit smoking in 2006, I didn’t automatically become healthy. I didn’t replace it with green smoothies and gym sessions.
Like many people, I swapped one coping mechanism for another. Cigarettes became food. In the same way that cigarettes had helped me to manage my weight in the past. Without the cigarettes I turned to comfort eating even more than before to soothe stress, numb emotions, or simply avoid what I didn’t want to deal with. Or to give me the pleasure I wanted after a hard day or when celebrating.
It wasn’t about laziness or lack of knowledge. I knew how to eat well. I understood the science. But the emotional piece – that’s the part so many of us struggle with. It’s not just about what we eat or how we move. It’s about why we do what we do, especially when we know it’s not helping.
That’s where coaching – and real change – come in.
Choosing to Run Toward Health
In March 2007, I discovered running. Not because someone told me to do it, and not because I was trying to become an athlete. I just needed something different. Something that reminded me I was capable of more than coping, and would make me NOT want to smoke. As running and smoking are not exactly compatible!
Running started as an outlet, but it turned into empowerment. It showed me I could do hard things, that I didn’t have to live at the mercy of my past habits. Over time, it became a new identity. I was no longer “a former smoker” or “someone trying to lose weight.” I was a runner. A mover. A woman who chose to move forward. Someone who was passionate about health and making choices that supported that.
And it meant that instead of eating for emotional reasons, I started eating to support my running goals, so I had enough energy and nutrition to fuel and recover from my training.
Fast forward 18 years, and I have a very impressive medal collection, including 12 marathons and countless half marathons, 10ks and 5ks.
When I started I never could have imagined I would achieve that! And I’m not done yet!
Why Coaching Made the Difference
Here’s the truth: I didn’t get here by accident. And I didn’t do it alone.
Weight loss and wellness coaching helped me stay grounded through the process. It gave me space to reflect, realign, and recommit when things got messy – because they do.
Coaching isn’t about being perfect. It’s about having someone in your corner who reminds you of your goals when life tries to pull you off track. Someone who helps you shift from all-or-nothing thinking to progress-over-perfection. Someone who helps you untangle the emotional side of weight and health and find strategies that actually fit your life.
It’s not just about food logs and fitness plans. It’s about accountability, connection, and compassion.
Swapping Old Habits for a New Life
Swapping my cigarette and food addictions for running and other fitness activities was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not just because it gave me better lungs, but because it gave me myself back.
I found freedom — not just from smoking or overeating, but from the cycle of shame, guilt, and starting over.
And it opened so many doors to me, including becoming a part time firefighter for 4 years, and even starting my own business helping others like you.
And the beautiful part? That kind of freedom is possible for anyone.
You don’t have to become a runner. You don’t have to follow someone else’s plan. But you do have to start believing that your health is worth protecting – and that it’s never too late to make a change.
The Real Win
That day at the clinic, I didn’t just get a good report. I got validation. I got proof that what I’ve been doing works – even if the changes were slow, even if the journey was full of starts and stops.
And that’s what I want for the people I coach. I want them to reach that moment where their body and mind and sense of wellbeing reflects all the quiet, powerful work they’ve been doing behind the scenes.
Where they finally feel the impact of showing up for themselves, one small decision at a time.
If you’ve been telling yourself you don’t have time to prioritize your health…
If you’ve been stuck in the “I’ll start Monday” loop…
If you’ve tried everything and still feel like nothing sticks…
Let this be your sign. You are not broken. You are not behind. You just need the right tools, the right support, and a reminder that you’re capable of rewriting your story — just like I did.
And I’d love to help you do it.
