Too Much on My Plate – The Power of Delayed Decision Making for Busy People
April 30, 2025
By Claire JonesIf you’re a busy person, chances are you spend your days juggling a million things – family, work, errands, decisions, responsibilities. By the time meals roll around, your brain is already maxed out and all thoughts of weight loss go out of the window.
And when food shows up? It’s easy to act on autopilot.
But there’s a small, simple mindset shift that can change the game: delayed decision making.
A Real-Life Example: Birthday Breakfast with a Big Plate
Not long ago, I went out with my daughter to celebrate her birthday. We’d planned it – just the two of us, enjoying a fun breakfast out. We picked the classic American breakfast and when it arrived… it was huge.
Three thick pancakes with melting butter, three hash browns, fried bacon, a sausage, and a tub of maple syrup. A proper feast.
It looked (and smelled) amazing, but immediately I felt it:
That quiet sense of overload—like there was too much on the plate, and not just literally.
In that moment, instead of pushing through or mindlessly clearing the plate, I paused.
I took off one pancake, two hash browns, and a rasher of bacon, wrapped them up, and put them aside to take home.
Not because I was “on a plan.” Not because I was being rigid
But because I realised: I didn’t need to decide right now if I was going to eat it all. I could pause. I could wait.
That pause? That was delayed decision-making in action.
What Is Delayed Decision Making?
Delayed decision making is the practice of creating space between a trigger (like a full plate or a stressful moment) and your response.
It doesn’t mean saying no. It just means saying not yet.
It gives you a moment to check in:
- “Am I really still hungry?”
- “Do I want this now, or just because it’s here?”
- “Would I enjoy this more later?”
This approach offers freedom, not restriction.
It removes the pressure to have all the answers in the moment… something busy people rarely have the luxury to do.
Why It’s a Game-Changer for Weight Loss in Busy Lives
If your day is packed from start to finish, you’re probably dealing with decision fatigue. That’s when your brain is so tired of choosing and responding that it defaults to habits – often the easiest or most comforting ones.
This mental overload leads to:
- Mindless snacking
- Finishing meals out of habit
- Eating as a coping tool for stress or exhaustion
And here’s the thing: when you’re constantly moving, it can feel counterintuitive to slow down. But with food and weight loss, slowing down often leads to better results.
Delayed decision making works with your lifestyle – not against it. It teaches you how to:
- Create quick “pause points” throughout your day
- Reduce emotional or stress-based eating
- Build trust with your body and hunger cues
- Stop viewing every food choice as an urgent decision
How Weight Loss Coaching Can Help You Build This Habit
If you’re navigating a busy, full life and also trying to feel better in your body, you don’t need another strict or complicated plan. You need tools that actually fit your life.
That’s where weight loss coaching comes in.
Through coaching, you’ll learn how to:
- Make realistic changes without adding to your stress
- Develop mindfulness around eating (even when time is tight)
- Build flexibility instead of perfectionism
- Use strategies like delayed decision making in real-time
And most importantly? You’ll have support and accountability – so you’re not doing it all alone.
Because yes, your plate is full.
But that doesn’t mean every decision has to be made right now.
If you’re someone with a lot going on who wants to feel more in control of your eating – without piling on more pressure – coaching can help you slow down, tune in, and start making empowered choices, one small pause at a time.
