After Decades of Dieting, Still Not “Thin Enough”? Why It’s Time to Let Go of the Chase
April 30, 2025
By Claire JonesI read an article recently that stopped me in my tracks. It told the story of a lady in her 70s who had spent over £30,000 and more than 9,000 days – that’s over 25 years – dieting. And still, she didn’t feel like she’d reached her “ideal” weight.
It made me pause.
Because the real question isn’t, “Why hasn’t she lost the weight?”
It’s, “When would it have ever felt like enough?”
And more importantly – is it actually about her weight? Or is it about her self-worth?
This is what we rarely ask ourselves when we start another diet or chase another goal: What am I really trying to fix?
The Hidden Cost of Constant Dieting
Stories like this are heartbreaking because they’re so common. They might not always make headlines, but they quietly unfold in the lives of countless people who’ve spent decades trying to be smaller – hoping that weight loss will lead to confidence, happiness, and control.
Instead, they find themselves trapped in a cycle of short-term results and long-term disappointment. Even when the scales drop, the doubts creep back in. The “just a few more pounds” mindset. The food guilt. The fear of putting it all back on.
And here’s the thing – it’s not about lacking motivation. Many of the people I support in my weight loss coaching practice are incredibly disciplined. What they need isn’t another diet. What they need is weight loss accountability, a shift in mindset, and support to break free from unrealistic expectations.
But What Are We Really Chasing?
Reading that article, I couldn’t help but ask myself – and now I ask you too – why do we always want to make ourselves smaller?
Somewhere along the line, we learned to believe that thinness equals success. That our worth is measured by how little space we take up. That shrinking our bodies would expand our lives.
But what if that story is wrong?
What if we’ve been measuring progress with the wrong tools?
Health Doesn’t Look the Same for Everyone – Especially as We Age
One of the things I often share with clients is this: your body changes as you age, and that’s completely natural. But diet culture hasn’t changed with us. It’s still selling the same expectations we had in our twenties, when our lives, hormones and priorities looked completely different.
According to Verywell Health, being in the “overweight” category later in life can actually be beneficial. It can help protect bone health, preserve muscle mass, and build resilience during illness or recovery. The BMI chart doesn’t tell the whole story – especially for older adults.
But these more balanced, compassionate facts rarely make it into the mainstream. We’re still bombarded with airbrushed images, diet ads, and “before and after” transformations. The result? We keep pushing, chasing, and feeling like we’re behind, even when we’re doing just fine.
My Own Experience with Weight
At points in the long distant past I’ve been 2 stone lighter than I am now. And do you know what? At that size, I finally liked how my arms and legs looked. But I also remember being constantly cold. I felt bony in places that didn’t feel right and lost my curves. I was uncomfortable. My energy was low, and maintaining that weight was a daily struggle.
That was a big turning point for me.
I realised that chasing thinness had actually taken me further away from how I wanted to feel. So I stopped trying to be smaller and started focusing on what really mattered.
Now, my definition of health is about being functionally well. That means:
- My physical health risks are low (healthy BMI and waist measurement, normal blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol, low resting heart rate, etc)
- My mobility is good
- My muscles are strong
- I can wear clothes I enjoy and feel good in
- I can do the things I want to do without being held back
- And I can eat in a way that sustains my body and my life without constant effort or stress
That’s what optimal health looks like for me. And it’s what I help others work toward through sustainable weight loss coaching that supports real life – not just numbers on a scale.
Let’s Shift the Goalposts
At Your One Life, we’re not chasing perfection. We’re letting go of it. Because perfection is a moving target – and it keeps you stuck.
Instead, we’re choosing:
- Consistency over extremes
- Compassion over control
- Progress over perfection
It’s not about giving up on your health goals – it’s about grounding them in what really supports your life and energy. Because no weight is ever worth sacrificing your happiness, confidence or mental wellbeing for.
And having the right support – with weight loss accountability and someone in your corner who gets it – makes all the difference.
You Are Already Worthy
If you’ve spent years feeling like your body is a problem to solve, I want you to know: it’s not. Your body is not broken. You don’t need to earn rest, or punish yourself into being “good enough.”
What you need – and what you deserve – is a peaceful relationship with food, with your body, and with yourself.
Because when we finally let go of the need to shrink, we make space for so much more: joy, freedom, strength, ease.
This is your one life. You get to choose how you live it.
Let’s stop chasing a thinner version of you, and start building a life that actually fits.
If you’re ready to step off the dieting treadmill and explore a more sustainable approach, with real weight loss coaching and compassionate accountability, I’d love to support you.
