Why Tackling Motorcycling Test Nerves Is About More Than Just Passing
November 1, 2025
By Claire Jones…it’s about becoming a safer, calmer rider for life.
If you’re feeling nervous about your motorcycle test, whether it’s CBT, Mod 1, or Mod 2, or beyond… you are absolutely not alone.
In fact, it’s one of the most common things I hear from riders I support.
“I just freeze up on test day.”
“My brain goes blank.”
“I know I can do it… but I panic and mess it up.”
And while it’s easy to think the goal is simply to get through the test, there’s actually a much more important reason to work on your mindset.
Your Nervous System Rides With You
Let’s get real for a second: learning to ride a motorbike is a big deal.
You’re learning to handle a machine that demands coordination, focus, and fast decisions, often surrounded by unpredictable drivers, changing road conditions, and sensory overload.
So if your brain tends to go into panic mode under pressure, or if your nerves get the better of you when you’re being observed… that doesn’t just affect your test. It can also affect how you feel on the road, and how you might respond when something unexpected happens.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
How you handle test-day nerves is a glimpse into how you might handle challenges on the road.
Being able to manage your mind is part of being a capable rider.
It’s not a bonus. It’s not fluff. It’s not just to get you through your test.
It’s a skill, and it’s one that keeps you safer
So if you struggled with nerves that led you to fail on your test, it might well be because you’re not quite as ready as you could be. That was a really uncomfortable truth for me to face, in the midst of the disappointment of my mod 1 fail. But one that led me to take action to work harder on my mindset, and it paid off massively.
Why mental practice for riders is so important
When you invest time in overcoming unhelpful beliefs and managing your nervous system before the test, you’re also learning the skills you’ll rely on every time you ride:
- Staying calm in high-pressure moments
- Thinking clearly when plans change
- Recovering quickly after a wobble
- Building trust in yourself and your reactions
These aren’t just nice-to-haves.
These are the foundations of safer riding.
Training, Gear, Maintenance … and Mindset?
You probably wouldn’t hesitate to invest in:
- A decent helmet, jacket, trousers gloves and boots
- Regular maintenance and servicing
- Additional training to sharpen your skills
So here’s the question I want to ask you:
Have you invested in your ability to improve riding confidence by staying calm under pressure?
Because mindset is part of your safety equipment.
And just like riding skills, it can be learned, trained, and strengthened.
“But I’ll just get more training…”
Yes – absolutely get more training.
But training works best when your nervous system isn’t hijacking your focus and taking a huge emotional toll.
What Mindset Work Actually Involves
This isn’t about “positive thinking” or ignoring fear.
It’s about:
- Understanding why your brain reacts the way it does
- Learning to calm your nervous system on demand
- Using tools like breathwork, motorcycle visualisation techniques, and cue phrases to ground yourself
- Developing a new relationship with pressure – one where you can think clearly and ride with confidence
- Challenging limiting beliefs that might be quietly holding you back
And once you learn how to do that for your test, you’ve got it in your back pocket for every tricky junction, windy day, or panicky moment out on the road.
This Is Why I Do What I Do
I’ve been there myself.
Failed tests. Wobbles. Freeze-ups.
And I’ve helped many riders who felt like they were the only ones struggling.
But once we worked on the mental side – to complement the skills – everything changed.
They passed.
They kept riding.
They started enjoying it again.
And most importantly… they became safer, more aware, and more in control on the road.
The Takeaway
If you’re struggling with test nerves, don’t just hope it will pass.
Train your brain the same way you train your hands and feet.
Because your mindset is part of your toolkit.
And learning how to manage your nerves now isn’t just about the test.
It’s about giving yourself the tools to stay safe and calm for years to come.

And… don’t wait until it becomes a big problem.
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve already passed and find yourself wobbling… the earlier you step in, the better.
Most of the clients I work with would probably have got there eventually without my help…
…but the experience would have continued to be more and more stressful – and increasingly expensive in terms of failed tests, extra lessons, and (in some cases) shattered dreams.
Mindset support doesn’t just make it possible, it can make it smoother, safer, and far more sustainable.
