Why Coaching is the Missing Piece When Using Weight Loss Jabs
October 12, 2025
By Claire JonesThere’s no doubt that weight loss injections like Ozempic / Wegovy and Mounjaro can be life‑changing. They help calm food noise, make portion control easier, and finally give your body a break from the hunger and cravings that can derail even the most determined efforts.
But what many people are discovering is that injections alone don’t guarantee sustainable success. Once the appetite suppression fades or the prescription ends, old habits often start to creep back in.
That’s where weight loss coaching and jabs become a powerful partnership.
The Gap Most People Don’t See Coming
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that anyone using prescription weight loss medication should also receive behavioural support around food, activity, and mindset. In other words: medication alone is not enough.
Yet in reality, coaching is often optional, minimal or missing altogether. Clinics, GPs, and online providers are overwhelmed by demand. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many only offer short check-ins or pre-written content. It’s not that they don’t care, they just don’t have the time.
That’s why I created a space where coaching is deeper, more personal, and actually designed around the individual. It was there before weight loss injections existed in the way they do now, and I believe it’s even more important now, as we navigate this new prescription-led world.
What Combining Weight Loss Injections with Coaching Really Looks Like
One of my clients recently started Wegovy after years of struggling with portion sizes and appetite. While the jab calmed her hunger, it raised new questions:
- “How do I make sure I eat enough for energy?”
- “What if I lose muscle?”
- “Why do I feel obsessed with food in a different way now?”
We’re working together daily – checking in, reflecting on mental and physical cues, and making sure she’s fuelling well for the gym and her life. She said it best:
“The jab gave me a chance. Coaching helps me use it wisely.”
And that’s the key to sustainable weight loss support. Real-time accountability and mindset work, not just appetite control.
Another client has been on Mounjaro for over a year. She didn’t want a 15-minute check-in with a new person each time. She wanted someone who understood her. That’s where weight loss coaching with me came in. We rebuilt her confidence with food and exercise, and created a structure that fits her life, not a meal plan she dreads.
When You Come Off the Jab
Another client came to me after stopping injections. The hunger came back… but so did the old thoughts:
- “I’ve blown it now.”
- “I deserve this after the day I’ve had.”
- “I shouldn’t waste food.”
We dug into those patterns, not just the food. She’s now stopped the regain, is building new habits, and will soon start losing the few pounds she regained. For the first time, she feels calmer around food without the jab.
Why “I’ll Just Stay on It” Isn’t a Plan
Some people say, “I’ll just stay on injections long-term.” But research and experience tells a different story. Many stop due to cost, supply issues, or side effects. And for some, the effectiveness just wears off.
That happened with one of my clients. The jab stopped working. She didn’t want to wait for things to unravel, so she reached out. We’re now focusing on rebuilding her habits and confidence, with the jab as one part of a bigger picture.
Why Some People Don’t Realise They Need Coaching… Until They Do
One of the biggest reasons people don’t get coaching support alongside jabs is because things feel fine at the start.
Hunger drops, cravings ease, and it seems like the problem is solved. But that’s exactly like stopping a course of antibiotics early because the symptoms have gone, when in fact, the underlying issue hasn’t been fully resolved.
It’s easy to mistake the jab’s early effectiveness for a long-term fix. But without coaching to reshape behaviours, challenge old thinking, and rebuild your habits from the ground up, the original patterns often come back, just waiting for the right stressor, slip-up, or life curveball.
Weight loss coaching isn’t just for picking up the pieces… it’s what equips you to handle challenges before they derail you.
When You Start Coaching from Day One
Two clients recently started injections – but they also started coaching immediately.
One said, “If I’m spending this money, I want to learn how to keep the results.”
Here’s what they’re doing differently:
- Planning meals while the food noise is quiet
- Tracking food, to make sure they’re eating enough
- Building balanced meals with all food groups
- Taking the right amount and doing the right kind of exercise to support their goals without destabilising themselves
They’re using the jab to create space. Coaching helps them fill it with smart choices.
Coaching: The Part the Prescription Doesn’t Cover
If weight loss injections are the tool, coaching is the training manual.
| Without Coaching |
With Coaching |
| Appetite drops, but habits are likely to stay the same | Habits evolve alongside appetite changes |
| You lose weight quickly, but a lot of it may be muscle | You protect muscle through structure and awareness |
| You feel “in control” only while medicated | You learn to trust your choices |
| You hit goal weight, then might panic | You have a long-term plan in place |
| You see it as treatment | You experience transformation |
Evidence That Coaching Makes a Difference
It’s not just stories – there’s solid research backing the role of coaching in weight management:
- A study combining self‑monitoring apps with health coaching showed stronger improvements in weight and cardiometabolic outcomes than self-monitoring alone. JMIR Publications
- A randomised trial tested adding telephone coaching (brief or extended) to an online weight loss program. Those who got coaching lost more weight and stayed more engaged over 12 months compared to those without coaching. JAMA Network
- A proof‑of‑concept project in obesity medicine combining provider‑directed coaching, prescription tools, and tailored plans also saw greater weight reduction over 24 weeks than the usual care path. ScienceDirect
- In qualitative research of long‑term digital coaching programs, professionals emphasised the crucial role coaches play in making change personal, flexible, and sustainable not one-size-fits-all. BioMed Central
These findings support the idea that coaching isn’t optional – it’s essential. When you layer coaching over medical or pharmaceutical interventions, you are more likely to get better outcomes, better retention, and more sustainable behaviour change.
Why Most Injection Providers and Weight Loss Programmes Can’t Give What You Need
Many programs adopt a “scaled” or group model to serve more people. That approach often sacrifices depth, personalisation, and continuity. Here are some limitations you’ll see:
High caseloads. When a coach is juggling dozens or hundreds of clients, each client receives less attention, less responsiveness, and more generic advice. That “one-size-fits-most” approach misses the nuances that make or break success.
Limited follow-up between sessions. Many services rely heavily on weekly or monthly check-ins, without the micro-support, nudges, and adaptation that help people course-correct in real time.
Focus on metrics over story. Many programs emphasise steps, calories, or scale outcomes over the internal, emotional, and behavioural shifts that actually drive sustainable change.
In contrast, my coaching is intentionally deep, relational, and flexible. I don’t take on many clients. I don’t just prescribe steps. I listen, adapt, and stay attuned to your evolving needs. That’s why clients tell me this feels different: its’ not just accountability, but transformation.
Integrating Coaching + Injections: A Cohesive Model
If you’re using weight loss injections or plan to, here’s how coaching should integrate, not compete, with them:
Onboarding mindset work
Before you even start the jab, we’ll clarify expectations, explore fears, and map out possible challenges. That way you begin with intention.
Early habit building while appetite is suppressed
Use this phase to rehearse new routines – planning, protein intake, movement, sleep, decision-making at lower hunger thresholds.
Tracking and feedback loops
Coaching helps you interpret the data – not as judgment, but as feedback. When a trend slips, we adjust early rather than waiting until the loss stalls or reverses.
Emotional resilience and identity work
When injections weaken or end, you’ll rely on identity, self‑understanding, and internal motivation. Coaching builds those foundations so the jab doesn’t feel like your only support.
Gradual transition and weaning
We can plan how to taper reliance on injections while maintaining momentum. Coaching ensures you don’t get lost when the buffer diminishes.
What I’ve Seen Over 5 Years of Coaching
In my own experience coaching clients over the past five years, it’s clear that those who make full use of the wraparound support I provide in addition to our 1:1 sessions don’t necessarily lose weight faster, but they’re the ones who keep it off. They don’t fall back into old patterns when life throws challenges their way. They stay steady, even through bereavement, illness, work stress, or holidays. That’s the difference.
These clients often tell me that without coaching, they would have given up after a few weeks, just like they always used to. But this time, they’re learning to keep going, adjust when needed, and stay focused on the long game. They’re not just chasing a result. They’re building the resilience and mindset to live well for life.
Why Most Weight Loss Injection Providers Don’t Go Far Enough
What I’m hearing is that they offer short sessions, group calls, or generic advice. But what I have found through 5 years of coaching is this.….
What most people need is:
- Time to explore deep-rooted behaviours
- Someone who gets to know them properly
- Support between sessions, not just during
- Accountability that’s more than a spreadsheet
That’s what I offer. Not just accountability, but genuine transformation from the inside out.
Real People. Real Change*.
- Sam used the jab to stop bingeing. Coaching helped her keep muscle, energy, and structure.
- Sophie stopped jabs and felt lost. Coaching helped her move from “emotional eater” to “self-aware chooser.”
- Two new starters are learning to succeed while the jab is working, not just afterwards.

Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need Another Restart
The real goal isn’t weight loss. It’s living in a way that doesn’t require restarting again.
Jabs can quiet the noise. Coaching gives you the clarity and confidence to stay the course. And when you combine weight loss injections with coaching, you turn a short-term tool into a long-term solution.
Because losing weight with help isn’t cheating. But keeping it off with understanding- that’s mastery.
