How to Have Your Treats Without Getting Tricked
September 28, 2026
By Claire JonesEnjoying treats while losing weight is possible when you recognise the habits and thinking patterns that can lead to eating more than intended. This article explores five common traps: feeling you have earned food through exercise, supermarket bargains, misleading health labels, eating before a planned restart and giving up after one unplanned choice. Three practical questions help you choose what you enjoy, anticipate obstacles and make a realistic plan. Treats can also include rest, movement and connection.
You buy the chocolate you fancy, sit down after a long day and open it while watching television. A little later, you reach for another piece and realise it’s all gone.
You’ve eaten it, but how much of it did you actually enjoy?
Or perhaps you spend the week looking forward to a meal out, skip lunch to “save yourself”, then arrive so hungry that you eat well beyond the point of feeling comfortable.
When you’re trying to lose weight or maintain your progress, situations like these can be frustrating. You want to enjoy yourself, and you also want your choices to support what you’re working towards.
Both deserve a place in your life.
With Halloween approaching, October is a useful time to explore how you can have your treats without getting tricked by the habits, offers and familiar thoughts that influence your decisions.
You can enjoy your favourite foods while working towards your weight goals. The amount, frequency and what happens around them all matter.
When “I deserve a treat” becomes automatic
You’ve had a difficult day. You’ve worked hard, dealt with everyone else’s needs and finally have a moment to yourself.
“I deserve something nice.”
Of course you do. The useful question is: what would feel good and meet your needs right now?
Sometimes the answer will be chocolate. Sometimes you’re hungry and need a proper meal. You might also need a break, some company or an evening where you stop trying to get everything done.
Food can bring pleasure and comfort. But if it becomes your automatic response to every difficult day, it’s worth checking whether you’re getting the other things you need as well.
You could enjoy your chocolate and give yourself permission to leave the washing until tomorrow.
Five tricks you might recognise
1. The “I’ve earned it” trick
You’ve been for a long walk, so you decide you’ve earned a large takeaway, dessert and a few drinks. You may enjoy them, but repeatedly eating more than you need can work against your weight goals, even when you’re active.
You don’t have to earn permission to enjoy food through exercise. Decide what you want to eat, consider your hunger and choose an amount that works for you.
2. The bargain trick
You go into the supermarket wanting one cake and come out with four because they’re on offer.
Now there are extras to eat before they go stale, and a choice about enjoyment has become a choice about avoiding waste.
Before you buy, ask whether the offer is useful to you. Could you freeze the extras? Would buying one cake you really want be the better option?
3. The health halo trick
The packaging says “high protein”, “natural” or “made with oats”, so you assume it must be a good choice for your weight goals.
Those words tell you something about the product, but they don’t tell you everything. Consider the portion, the overall nutritional information, whether you enjoy it and how it fits with the rest of your food.
You may find you’d be more satisfied having the thing you wanted in the first place.
4. The last-chance trick
“I’m starting again on Monday, so I might as well finish these tonight.”
When you believe a food will soon be forbidden, it can feel urgent to eat it now. That makes it harder to stop when you’ve had enough.
Practise leaving room for favourite foods in your ongoing plans. Being able to have something another day can take some of the pressure out of today’s decision.
5. The “I’ve blown it” trick
You eat more than you intended at lunch and decide the whole day is ruined. By evening, you’re eating things you don’t particularly want because you’ll “be good tomorrow”.
One choice doesn’t require a second one that leaves you feeling worse. Notice what happened, learn what you can and return to your usual routine. There’s no need to punish yourself or wait for a new week.
Three questions to help you choose
A small amount of thought beforehand can make these situations easier:
- What would I really enjoy?
- What might trip me up?
- What would help me enjoy it and stay on track?
For an evening treat, your answers might be:
“I’d enjoy some of my favourite chocolate after dinner. Eating straight from the bag while distracted means I don’t notice how much I’ve had. I’ll put some on a plate, put the bag away and take time to enjoy it.”
For a meal out:
“I want a relaxed evening with friends and dessert if something appeals. Arriving ravenous tends to catch me out. I’ll eat normally beforehand and check how comfortably full I feel before ordering more.”
For a proper break:
“I’d love a lunchtime walk. Waiting until all my jobs are finished means it rarely happens. I’ll put a realistic break in my diary and have a shorter option for busy days.”
Your plan should fit the situation you actually face. Make it simple enough to use when you’re tired or busy.
This is where accountability can help. You might already know what tends to catch you out, but putting a plan into practice consistently is another matter. Having someone to check in with gives you a reason to pause, look honestly at what happened and decide what to do next. You can recognise what worked, take responsibility for your choices and get support with the parts you’re finding difficult.
Treats can support your whole wellbeing
A treat can be something delicious. It can also be fresh air, an early night, a good book, time with a friend or a ready-made dinner that gives you an evening off cooking.
Preparing tomorrow’s lunch might feel like another job, but it can also be a kindness to the version of you who has back-to-back appointments and very little time.
What feels helpful will vary from person to person and from day to day. Choose things that bring you enjoyment, meet a need or make life easier.
You don’t need to change everything at once. Start with one situation where you regularly get caught out and decide what would help. Try it, notice how it goes and adjust if you need to.
Enjoyment matters, and so does how your choices leave you feeling afterwards. A little preparation can help you make room for both.
If you recognise these patterns and find yourself making the same promises each week, you can get support to follow through.
The YourOneLife Kickstarter month gives you space to look at your eating patterns, understand what gets in your way and start putting a realistic, personalised plan into practice. You’ll have one-to-one support and accountability to help you test what works in your everyday life and make adjustments along the way.
